Our News
Since last time, we've been busy following up from our Apr events, celebrating International Clinical Trials Day (May 20), launching #TrialsTues,  and doing some hard thinking about what's next for Research4Me.

For those that have been following, we didn't win the PopupStar clinical trial awareness competition last month, but we learnt lots in the process. This is also a little late due to an unexpected IT issue last week.
From mid July, we are going to move to a shorter, fortnightly news and research opportunities update. We're making some other changes as described below, with more announcements in the pipeline. So keep an eye on our social media to hear about those in the coming weeks. As always, be sure to let us know if we are doing is useful.

Happy reading & hope to see you connecting in our Facebook group!  Till next time... Janelle.
Got clinical trial questions, ideas, experiences to share?
Want to connect with others like you or volunteer?
Last year we launched an online community on our website. But it seems more prefer using Facebook. So in the first of the changes for Research4Me, we're closing the website community for now. We will be in touch with current members to notify them directly in the next week, and would like to thank them for taking a chance on something new and signing up.
To replace the website community, we are making available two alternatives:

1. A database people can register their interest in either volunteering for research, partnering with researchers or being part of an advocates program (coming soon).
2. A Facebook Group as the place for questions, sharing ideas and experiences, and connecting with others around medical research.  We know not everyone uses Facebook, but it seems many people prefer this platform to connect, so we will see how it goes. For the moment the group is called Research Gamechangers, although we are open to better suggestions. Feel free to add your two cents worth regarding the name by joining the group and adding your thoughts to the relevant discussion post. We're pleased to see the level of engagement happening already in this group, and look forward to this continuing to blossom.
We still believe there is value in a secure off-Facebook community and hope in time there is enough demand to bring it back. In the meantime, we hope these new ways of connecting and showing your interest in research will work for you.

Over the past month, we've released summaries and videos from the PExS2018 workshop we hosted. In case you missed them, click on the links to access the 3 summaries covering the trial participant experience, the consumer representative experience in trials and how consumers and researchers can better work together.
Be a Part of #TrialsTues
Get your stories out there.
Internationally, May is the month alot of events are run to raise awareness of clinical trials. While that is great, we'd like to see that effort continue throughout the year. So for #clinicaltrialsday this year, we launched the #TrialsTues hashtag, and every Tuesday we will share on our social media platforms articles that explain clinical research or stories of participation to help further demystify clinical trials.

We hope this will catch on and encourage others to do the same. Please share these so we can help educate the community, and let us know if you have own stories to share.

Further, to demonstrate our commitment to increasing access to & partnership in #clinicaltrials, between 5-10pm AEST every Tuesday (only), researchers can freely post about the medical research studies they need volunteers or consumer input into to our Facebook Gamechangers group. See our News for the rules if you want to take up this opportunity or contact us.

SLHD Patient & Family Symposium
On the 19th June, we attended the Sydney Local Health District's Innovation Week Patient & Family Symposium. While it was not focussed on research, there was much that could be applied to health and medical research discussed, and it was heartening to hear that consumers want greater involvement in medical research.

Five Trials Currently Recruiting

Not all trials are for people without options, or for testing new drugs. To demonstrate the diversity of clinical trials looking for volunteers, here are 5 trials listed on the ANZCTR that recently began recruiting in Australia:

Research4Me has no relationship with any of these trials. If you are interested in more information, please click the links and contact the investigators listed directly.

Outside News
We thought you might find some of these recent articles of interest:
  • What you need to know about accessing trials outside your province in Canada. We've included this because, although it is Canadian, it is a patient talking about the effort they had to go to access the trials they found. In Australia, you usually don't have to be in the same city if you are prepared to travel to appointments. Always contact the trial site and ask if they accept people travelling, and whether there is any financial support to do so. It won't be available for every trial, but some trials do have that funding. And if you need help finding trials, contact us.
  • Did you know there are also clinical trials and research done for our furry friends? Here's an example: UQ Vet helps pets with cancer. Maybe ask your own vet next time you visit.
    • An Interview on ABC Radio National speaking with 3 people in Adelaide who have participated in cancer clinical trials about the experience, and some contextual information from Prof In Olver.
    • In June 2018, NHMRC, the Australia Research Council and Universities Australia issued the updataed Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research, 2018 (the 2018 Code). As this is one of the overarching guidance documents researchers in Australia should adhere to, we thought you might be interested to take a look.
    • Going further to make all clinical trials public. This is a blog post talking about the UK's Medical Research Council and other international efforts to increase registration and reporting of clinical trials. Anecdotally, our own ANZ clinical trial registry (ANZCTR) also supports the AllTrials campaign, and have said through personal communications that a reporting facility will hopefully be available on the ANZ CTR by the end of the year. Learn more about the register's plans in our Thinktank report to be released soon.
If at any time you have feedback, suggestions, stories to offer, or want to know more about our services, please don't hesitate to contact us via email, phone or social media. If there are synergies with what you are doing, let us know about it so we can share and/or collaborate for greater impact.
